こころのふれあいを学ぶ留学  留学で一番大切なことは、語学を習得するだけでなく、人と人とのすばらしい出会いや、心と心がふれあう感動を体験し学ぶことではないでしょうか。１９７５年、私は３０代の平凡なサラリーマン生活を捨て、オーストラリアに渡りました。海外旅行が今日のように一般的でなかったころの「脱サラ留学」でした。 右も左も未知の世界に飛び込んだ私は、周りのたくさんの人たちに助けられての毎日でしたが、そのとき大変幸運だったのは、現在も家族ぐるみのお付き合いが続いている素敵なホストファミリーや、多くの友人に巡り会えたことでした。 得がたい体験を財産に帰国した私は、留学のお手伝いこそ私の天職と決め、これからの留学への理念と信念を「島宗の留学」として、以降４半世紀にわたり愚直に語り続けてまいりました。 海外渡航者が年間１８００万人を超えようとしている昨今、２０万人とも３０万人ともいわれる人達が海外留学を目指しています。留学の世界に身を置くものとして、素直に喜びたいとは思いますが、心配も若干あります。 現在はすべての価値観が安易な方向へと押し流され、「大量生産」が「手作り」を駆逐する「マス」優先の時代になってしまいました。このごろ街では「プチ」とか「簡単」とか「安価」とかを売り物にした、留学には程遠い、魂の入っていないプログラムを多く目にします。 大きな期待を胸に雄飛する人たちの中で、何人が満足して、又何人が失望して帰国することになるのでしょうか。 「島宗の留学」では、絶対に曲げることのできないポリシーがあります。それは、留学機関・学校を皆様にご紹介するに当たり、私が直接、学校経営者や教師から教育に対する信念をうかがい、その理念に共感できる学校のみを厳選しているということです。 「島宗の留学」では「海外語学研修」はもとより、養護施設で先進の福祉を実地体験する「英国・福祉ボランティア」、学生アルバイトで学費を稼ぎながら学ぶ「英国・学生アルバイト」、熟年世代の生涯を通じて学び続ける意欲に応える「生涯学習プログラム」、スポーツを通して異文化を体験する「スポーツ交流」など、特徴のあるプログラムを他に先駆けて発表してまいりました。 これからも留学の中に「人と人との出会い」「心と心のふれあい」を追い求め、多くの皆様のお役に立てるよう努力してまいりたいと思います。

GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE HEART TO HEART BY STUDYING ABROAD Acquiring a languege skill is not the only important part of studying abroad. Meeting people and having wonderful experiences in a different country are equally important. In 1975,in my mid-thirties, I gave up my life as a business man,and moved to Australia to study. Unlike today,studying abroad was not so popular at that time. Although I had a difficult time in a totally strange world,many people around me were most helpful, making my new life in Australia much easier. I thought I was lucky because I met families and made friends, with whom I still keep in touch. After I returnde to Japan with precious experiences, I realized that helping students studying abroad would be the best career for me. As a result, Iestablished"Nagoya Ryugaku Centre"and have supported people who study in foreign countries for more than 25years. Today,over 18 milion people travel abroad 200,000 to 300,000 people are willing to study abroad each year. While I am glad about this,I also have some concerns about it. I think people's sense of value has become more materialistic,and "mass production" has driven "hands-on production" out of the business. There are many study abroad programs that capitalize on "short-term"," easy", or "low-price" gimmicks. These types of programs seem not to be established for students, but for making money. I wonder how many people who challenge study abroad would be satified with these types of programs. I have a strong belief and policy in study abroad business that distinguishes my "Nagoya Ryugaku Centre" from other "mass productive" programs. To provide the best programs, we carefully select overseas schools and educators, whose policies and philosophies in education are similar to our own. "Nagoya Ryugaku Centre" provides not only our popular "languege education program", but also provides various types of study abroad, such as welfare volunteer activity in England , where students will learn advanced welfare services, a part-time job in England, where students learn English with a paid job, a life-long learning program, which is for middle-aged to retired peaple, who are willing to learn through their later years, and an athlete program, where students will learn different cultures through sports activities.
